The Coal Men are a three-piece unit led by Coleman, who knows his way around a Telecaster. He’s played sideman for a host of artists from Matthew Ryan to Taylor Swift — on the road and in the studio. When he’s not doing that or producing and engineering other artists in his home studio, Coleman returns to The Coal Men like a runner touching home plate.

Drummer Dave Ray has been Coleman’s primary musical partner for all of the band’s 16 years. Paul Slivka joined on bass five years ago.

Few bands stay together. This one has survived long enough to be tossed about by a volatile music business. They’ve experienced the reality of life on the road vs. the youthful dreams of it. And they’ve come out the other side with some wisdom to share. You could say the The Coal Men are right on schedule, taking on this subject matter.

They’ve toured with or opened shows for the likes of Todd Snider, The Avett Brothers, Southern Culture on the Skids, and Tony Furtado. They’ve played Mountain Stage, Music City Routes, and the Americana Music Association Festival.

They’ve had songs in ABC’s Nashville and Sons of Anarchy (“Stuck,” “Almost,” and “Houston Memory.”). Coleman even wrote for two years at the legendary Acuff-Rose Music Publishing.

But despite their experiences, you get the feeling that The Coal Men aren’t too worried about anything other than their love for music and their bond with each other.
