Composer, arranger, orchestrator, educator, bandleader, musical director, producer, saxophonist, and ukuleleist, Samson Trinh was born and raised in Richmond, Virginia. He attended Virginia Commonwealth University studying composition and jazz arranging. At VCU, Samson earned his B.M. in Jazz Studies and Education. Samson is a winner of Richmond Jazz Society’s prestigious Joe Kennedy, Jr. Scholarship and is an alumnus at New York’s Manhattan School of Music where he studied jazz composition.

Samson has composed, arranged, produced, collaborated and recorded for/with In Your Ear Recording Studios, Daniel Clarke, Jason Mraz, Susan Greenbaum, and the Richmond Symphony. As a music educator, he has been a private instructor, taught K-12 public schools, and founded UKE ‘n’ ROLL, whose mission is to promote ukuleles in schools through teaching & performing ROCK SHOWS! Students (ages 7-18 and adults) from his ukulele class ensembles and “Rock-shops” have learned to play ukes with a combination of singing, music theory, performing percussion instruments and Rock ‘n’ Roll history.

Samson is the founder and musical director of The Upper East Side Big Band. The 10 to 22-piece organization is made up of the finest musicians in the capital of Virginia. Their repertoire features swingin’ big band sounds to the modern numbers that are composed and arranged by Trinh and pianist/member, Adrian Duke. In June 2012, The Upper East Side Big Band was honored to be the house orchestra for SPARC’s “Live Art” concert (developed by Erin Thomas-Foley, featuring students of all abilities) working with guest artists, Jason Mraz, Susan Greenbaum, Jesse Harper, Robbin Thompson, Steve Bassett, Josh Small and musical arrangements by Trinh with music advisor/director, Daniel Clarke. “Live Art” has earned numerous accolades including the Peoples Choice Award from PBS’s Online Film Festival. He is a past member of the Mills Family Band.

Samson Trinh & The Upper East Side Big Band is a Best Ensemble winner for Richmond Magazine’s Theresa Pollak Prize for Excellence in the Arts! The selectors wrote: “Under the guidance of Richmond native and human dynamo Samson Trinh, the Upper East Side Big Band pulls together a variety of musicians who combine jazz, rock and old standards into performances that end up surprising both the audience and the conductor. Samson’s joy in creation is truly infectious.” They are touring artists for the Virginia Commission for the Arts.

Coming December 22nd, 2013, Upper East Side Big Band will once again be the house orchestra for SPARC’s “Live Art: Tree of Life” show featuring Jason Mraz, kd lang, Christina Perri, Rene Marie, Robbin Thompson, Steve Bassett, Susan Greenbaum, Daniel Clarke, Jesse Harper, Josh Small, and 200 inspiring student performers! Samson will act as musical arranger and conductor for the show.
