Since its inception in 2001, Blue Line Highway has forged a unique hybrid of rock, blues, country, jazz and Americana.

When she was 6, Melissa McKenna was handed a guitar that her uncle had won in a poker game. Many years, and many miles later, after she was encouraged to “do something” with her music, she founded Blue Line Highway.

Giving a strong and beautiful voice to the combo is lead singer Julia Dooley. She was born and raised in the foothills of southwestern Virginia; you can hear the deep roots of the area’s country music in her voice. Julia is a true vocalist who internalizes the lyrics and brings every song to life. Often compared to that of Chrissie Hynde and Sandy Denny, her voice is both powerful and emotive. Julia is also a natural harmonica player, and her gentle percussion parts are like the secret flavors in the soup! She’s a songwriter as well and BLH plays all she brings to the table.  At the end of June 2013, Melissa and Constance Sisk (who joined in 2011 to replace bassist Ray Alfano) left Blue Line Highway to pursue other interests on the West Coast. The farewell tour consisted of four special shows in June at four of the band’s favorite venues. All were bittersweet events.

The remaining quartet continues Blue Line Highway with a new bold yet simpler sound. The show must go on and so the BLH quartet has booked plenty of shows through December of 2013 and furthur onward, continuing to play selected songs by Melissa along with new and old originals by all the band and an ever-changing kaleidoscope of cover songs.

This band is made of love and friendship, which shines through their playing and makes their music rise to heights even above just the sum of its parts. Once you see them together and hear the results, you’ll know that the band itself is more than four musicians; it’s their joy.
