Founded in December, 2012, Americana/Folk group Big Virginia Sky hit the stage without the slightest idea of what they’d gotten themselves into. Within minutes of their first show, the musical conversation was evident and the audience was on their feet throughout the performance.
Featuring 5-time IBMA Banjo Player of the Year, Steve Martin Award recipient and touring banjo player for Alan Jackson, Sammy Shelor of Lonesome River Band adds flare to the group that makes them stand out amongst other Americana bands. Big Virginia Sky also showcases the talent of Gulf Coast native and Cole Clark sponsored guitar player James Adkins on vocals and award-winning mandolinist and songwriter, Scott Slay. Brothers and award-winning instrumentalists, Dale and Steve Lazar provide percussion and bass as a rhythm section frequently referenced as a “heartbeat” in the Americana scene.
Featuring all-original music, bluegrass and folk traditionals and original instrumental pieces, Big Virginia Sky can be compared to a mix of of the Sam Bush Band, Tim O’Brien, Darrell Scott, the Punch Brothers, Lonesome River Band, James Taylor, The Zac Brown Band and Ricky Skaggs.
The group has collective talent and a myriad of experience performing with and opening up for the likes of Glen Phillips, Alan Jackson, Katie Rogers, Edgar Meyer, The Band Perry, Taylor Hicks, Lonesome River Band, Sarah Jarosz, Steve Martin and the Steep Canyon Rangers and more.
