Late to Bat— Hits Home Runs

Roger Street Friedman played music since he was a kid and was a budding recording engineer. But for many years he pushed these gifts aside to pursue a steady career in business and to start a family. In 2006, after the loss of his parents and birth of his first child, the singer-songwriter realized that his passion and talent for writing, performing and recording songs was very much still there.  “To be myself, I had to give music everything I had,” says Roger. “You only get one shot in this life and you have to go for broke.”

Roger released his debut album, The Waiting Sky, in 2014 at the age of 51; champions included No DepressionAmerican SongwriterRelix Magazine, MSN Music, The Alternate Route, Elmore Magazine and the New York Daily News. The album led to opening slots for Los Lobos and The Blind Boys of Alabama. Shoot the Moon came three years later and reached #2 on the Roots Music Report Americana Country Album Chart. His songs have been shared with audiences both in the US and overseas, via both radio play, and numerous podcasts and playlists.  No Depression’s review of Shoot the Moon is fittingly titled “Roger Street Friedman—Late to Bat, But Hits Another Home Run.” Roger’s third album, which is in the works, is sure to knock it out of the park too.

Music with a Message

Roger sings about the challenges and joys of life—relationship struggles, loss, family, beautiful moments. He travels back and forth to Nashville for co-writes, has been playing local shows and touring the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic and West Coasts, and is using some of his music, including the forthcoming single “Sun Never Sets” from his third album, to raise awareness of and money for refugees and immigrants. At a recent show at The Guthrie Center in Great Barrington, he had the whole audience singing the chorus to a new song called “Rise.” In that storied venue and former church, it sounded like many voices joined in a prayer for a brighter day.  He has worked with some of musics greats such as Larry Campbell, Big Al Anderson, Amy Helm, Tom Chapin, Guy Davis, Joel Rafael and Peter Yarrow.

Roger is making the most of this life by working hard, following passions, sharing wisdom, spending time with loved ones and helping people in need. Listeners may find themselves pondering what more they can do to do the same.
