John Conley CD Release Concert!
Jan 10, 2011 | 0 commentsJohn is a multifaceted musician, well-versed in several forms of music, ranging from jazz to folk, blues to bluegrass. AfterThoughts is a project of singer/songwriter songs written by John Conley over the past decade. John has been recording his own compositions numbered by the hundreds from an early age but the idea of AfterThoughts was born out of a desire to create simply constructed acoustic music but with thicker harmony and textural twists. John has a degree in Jazz Studies from the acclaimed Virginia Commonwealth University and plays extensively with a variety of groups in varying styles. However, his studies seemed to hinder his creative process more than help it in this project. “It was really when I became so obsessed with theory and harmonic motion that I had to stop thinking, re-tune the guitar to something that sounded good to...
My Sweet Patootie
Jan 10, 2011 | 0 commentsWith humour-driven lyrics, swinging acoustic string virtuosity and hot vocal harmonies, these former members of the award-winning roots group “Tanglefoot” are tighter than last year’s swimsuit! When Sandra Swannell recorded with Canada’s legendary Stompin’ Tom Connors in 2005, she was in the middle of writing a suite of musical sketches for string orchestra. After years of juggling the folk world with classical (former principal violist of the Georgian Bay Symphony), she finally grabbed her fiddle and jumped the fence into the roots music world for good. Terry Young’s dexterity and aggressive approach to finger-style guitar is described as “virtuosic” by BBC critic James Harrox, and “jaw dropping” by FAME’s Mark S. Tucker. Together they have created a vibrant new identity for themselves with their unique concoction of “countrified jazz”. It’s an old-fashioned shotgun wedding of acoustic swing and Canadian rural roots. visit their website:...
